Lipomas are abnormal growths of fatty tissue and are usually benign. A cyst, in contrast, is a fluid filled cavity. Most cysts are benign, but on occasion they may be found in certain tumors. Both growths may occur anywhere in the body.

Lipomas are benign tumors composed of adipose tissue, firm in texture, painless and can occur in any part on body whereas cyst is a membrane bound closed sac which contains any material including air, fluid and semi-solid material. Cyst can be anything from sebaceous cyst to ovarian cyst which can be a carcinoma.
