What is the difference between diffusion and osmosis?

Both diffusion and osmosis occurs when particles spread from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration. However the particles in osmosis have to travel through a semi-permeable membrane, is similar to a filter reducing the size of the particles.

Osmosis is a transfer of material through some type of medium like cells. Diffusion a dispersing of material in a larger area of medium like air or water.
