When DVDs first appeared, films were often split into separate discs. Then manufacturers changed the technology and were able to put more information on discs without altering the format. Blue-ray discs have recently been introduced. Using a different color laser beam they are able to store more information.

There DVD+ and DVD-. They don't appear to have any difference in quality or the way the video plays, they are just different formats. Burners can do both, however if it doesn't say that, then it can't. DVDRs are writable 1 time, DVDRWs are writable several times.

Movies on DVD are available in different formats such as Full Frame (image fills entire TV screen, but parts of the original film have been cropped off to achieve this) or Widescreen (preserves the original theatrical version and leaves black bars at the top and bottom of the screen).
