What is the difference between autobiographies and biographies?

I thought they were the same thing, but I guess not!

The difference is pretty simple: an autobiography is written by the person it's about (for example, Oprah's autobiography would be written by Oprah), and a biography is written by someone else (for example, Oprah's biography would be written by John Doe, Jane Smith, etc.).

Autobiographies are written by the author. Obviously, they will know a lot about their own life, and it would probably be written before they die. Biographies are written by someone else about the person, often with the consent of that person or their family if they happen to be deceased.

Autobiographies are life stories that are written by the person the story is about. A biography is a person's life story written by someone other than who the story is about.

They are similar because they both tell the life story of an individual person. The difference is the author. A biography is written about one person and written by someone else. An autobiography is a written about someone and written by that very same person. Autobiographies tend to be written in first person whereas biographies are written in third person.
