A bong is a slang term for a water pipe. A regular pipe involves no water. A bong is a pipe that uses water as a filter for the smoke. While carburators or bongs with "carbs" used to be more popular, nowadays most are made with a slide mechanism for releasing the smoke through the water.

The "bong" is a small form of the "hookah", a form of pipe invented in India, where the smoke is drawn through water before it reaches the user. In its most simple form, the tobacco (or marijuana) is placed in a small straight-stemmed clay pipe, and the smoke is drawn through water in a small glass bottle.
