Typically when you hear a clicking noise on an older car it usually the lifter or the injectors. Older injector can develop a ticking sound. Lifter tend to make noise as the start to come out of adjustment. However if the noise is loud you might have some internal problems.

Clicking noises could be a number of things but likely is caused by noisy lifters or tappets. This may or may not be serious depending on how loud it is and if it goes away. If it it loud and never goes away it could be very bad.

A couple of things can cause this noise. it could be worn valve lifters, leaky exhaust manifold gasket, cold fuel injectors or a number of different emissions valves. Try to pinpoint the source of the clicking by holding one end of a tube to your ear then "scan" the engine.

The clicking noise most likely is due to it being low on oil. It could also be that your oil has broken down, it's time to change it.
