What is the cause of crankshaft position sensor failure?

The crankshaft position sensor is an electronic device that can fail on its own like any other over time. Heat and constant spinning can also cause failure.

Unless you have had some serious engine internal damage then it was probably caused by age. Sensors can wear out. Especially if the vehicle has a lot of miles on it. Sometimes failure can be caused heat and vibration though.

Typically, the sensor fails due to mechanical wear, loss of magnetism, damaged connectors, or possibly even a foreign object has gotten into it.

You will have to take it in to find out what is causing the problem with the car. it could be anything that is causing it. Only a professional can tell you what is wrong.
