There are several different causes, and usually there is no evidence of an underlying heart condition. Having an overactive thyroid is one cause. A few others are using alcohol, blood clot in the lungs, or pneumonia. Of course, heart problems are a cause as well, such as heart valve disease, coronary heart disease and many other heart conditions.

This happens with the electrical system of the heart has a malfunction that causes the top part of the heart muscles (the artia) to just flutter instead of fully contract and pump blood. This can be caused by anything that damages that electrical signal such as a heart attack or a birth defect.
