Lemon laws were established to prevent someone from purchasing a vehicle with persistent problems. The California lemon law requires two service repair attempts, if the problem is extremely dangerous, and four repair attempts, if the problem is not life-threatening, before the vehicle can be deemed a lemon by the courts.

The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act is the Calif "Lemon Law." (Civil Code, Sec. 179) says that consumers who lease/buy a new car are entitled to a vehicle that meets the terms specified in the warranty. The seller must make reasonable attempts to make things right, or replace the vehicle.

California Lemon Laws and the federal Lemon Law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) provide for compensation to California consumers of defective motor vehicles. Under the California Lemon Law or the federal Lemon Law, you must make several attempts to have the vehicle repaired under the manufacturer's factory warranty.

Any warrantied vehicle with serious defects that can't be repaired within a reasonable time has to be replaced with a new car or have the price refunded by the manufacturer.
