General rules are to transplant when the temperature is cooler like in the morning and to disturb the root system as little as possible. If transferring out of a pot and is root-bound, scratch the root ball to encourage root growth. If digging out of ground - keep as much of the roots intact as possible. Always water thoroughly afterward.

It's best to move the tree in the spring or fall. Tie the roots into a ball and then cover the roots with a burlap bag that is secured so the tree and roots stay in place. You can also cut the top of the tree to reduce stress.

Find a local supplier that transports plants, locally or long distance, make an offer for transfer of an Azalea. It will usually be around 25-30 dollars.
