To clean out a 4" cast iron pipe, start by wiping both the inside and outside of the pipe down with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. You can then remove stubborn debris inside the pipe by using a bottle brush or an old toothbrush. Usa a wire brush for rust removal. Immediately dry the pipe to prevent rusting.

The best solution is to use CLR and hot water. The CLR can be poured down the pipe to remove any built up calcium deposits. Hot water then flushes out the chemicals and you have a clean pipe.

Depending on what it is dirty with (rust, sewer, hair balls, etc) it could be easier just to replace the piece of pipe completely rather than waste your time and effort cleaning it. This is especially true if the piece is rusty, it may fail in the future and you would have to replace it then anyway.
