I have read several of Stephen King's novels and in my opinion, "The Shining" is his best work, along with the coming of age movie, "Stand by Me".

It would be a good idea to start with his first original published work called Carrie which came out in the early 70's. It is about a girl who possesses special powers and uses this newly found phenomena to settle scores. This book really catapulted King as a prolific writer of many great works that followed.

There are so many engrossing Steven King novels, many of which have been turned into films. However, The Stand is for me the most dark, gripping and poignant. Read it!

I personally believe that skeleton crew is by far the best Stephen King novel ever written! The plot is so surprising and it always keeps you wanting to read more! Every chapter is like a good movie, and they always end leaving you wanting to read more. I definitely recommend this book!
