The one's that contain built in moisturizers and specialize in protecting hair from elements such as toxic and residue build up or things that are harsh for hair including hard water. Some of the best brands for this are Dove, Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell, Aveda and for those on a budget. Suave offers a wide variety of moisturizing based shampoos.

To wash hair in hard water you will need a detergent shampoo. Bumble and Bumble Sunday shampoo make the claim that they are the best.

Jason natural brand is the best. Any shampoo without sodium lauryl sulfate is best. That is the foaming agent used in most shampoos and it is pure detergent. Very bad for the hair and skin. To make sure all shampoo is rinsed, use apple cider vinegar to rinse your hair and make it shine.

The best shampoo is one whose smell and characteristics you like, rinsed out of your hair with soft water. All you need is enough softened water to remove the shampoo and you will have shampoo that works. In hard water the minerals prevent all of the shampoo from rinsing out.

If you have hard water, you need a clarifying shampoo or something that is really gentle yet cleansing like one of the kinds that Suave offers that are gentle and cleansing. If you prefer a higher end brand, try Biolage or another Matrix product which will deep clean without damaging.

It is best to use a natural or unscented shampoo with hard water. Certain chemicals may have reactions, causing undesirable effects, such as hair loss. Usually the packaging will say unscented.

Panetene, Mizani, Paul Mitchell, and BedHead by Tigi are all an excellent shampoo for that purpose. All are very helpful with reversing the effects that some hard water conditions may have on your hair. Be sure to follow up with a moisturizing conditioner that protects the hair from water damage as well.
