Brittle nails can be a symptom of low calcium in the body. An easy way to get more calcium is to take a quality calcium supplement everyday. If supplements aren't your thing there are foods that are good sources of calcium you can eat like milk, yogurt, cheese, or salmon.

There are many preparations on the market to paint on your nails to keep them from splitting. Also you might want to try Knox gelatin and maybe try wearing rubber gloves when your hands are in very hot water.

Visit your local pharmacy and get the nutritional supplement Biotin. Not only is it great for your nails but for your hair too. Most companies make a vitamin geared toward women that have higher levels of Biotin in it as well.

Brittle nails are often an indication that you may be anemic, or extremely low in iron. You should get a blood test to determine if this is the root cause, and if so, you can easily fix the condition by taking iron supplements. Also make sure to use a good hand moisturizer and don't let your skin get too dry.

Soak you hands and nails in a mixture of raw egg and vegetable oil. Also if you are exposed to water, like swimming in chlorinated pools, this could cause brittle nails also. As contradictory as it may sound, you may be dehydrated and need to increase your, internal water intake, to hydrate your self from the inside.

Often nails just get more brittle with age. If you keep your hands in water a lot or use nail polish, this can cause them to split and peel. Keep your nails short and don't use polish.
