It is important to determine the cause of the inflammation and to make sure that infection is not involved. A group of medications called NSAIDs includes aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin) and naproxen sodium (Aleve). There are some herbal remedies that are thought to reduce inflammation as well.
Any of the NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs), such as aspirin, naproxen (Aleve) or ibuprofen (Motrin) are good anti-inflammatory medications and are available over the counter.
In terms of non-prescription medications, NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Advil, Motrin and Aleve are effective. Predisone is a widely used and powerful prescription anti-inflammatory.
The most common prescribed treatments are OTC's, aspiren, ibuprofen, or naproxen. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Prescription NSAIDS, Corticosteroids, for example prednisone, are also used to reduce inflammatory response.
As far as over-the-counter medications, ibuprofen is the most commonly used for minor inflammation. Ask a pharmacist if at all possible before using if you take aspirin daily or any other prescription medications. Heart medications especially may have adverse interaction risks. There are other options for extreme inflammation, but please consult a doctor for options for you problem.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen sodium (Aleve, Naprosyn) are excellent. Caution should be used when taking these in combination with certain medications or specific medical conditions.
