The most common water flask might actually be the best one...stainless steel. Pewter is good too, but is more likely to dent where the steel verson will stay more durable.

That depends on who you ask. some old timers like rawhide flask some people like polymer style flask. Find what you think would be easier for you to work with if your intentions are to make your own flask. Plastics can make a great flask but are not always easy to work with.

In my opinion, the best material for a water flask is stainless steel. Stainless steel does not rust, stain, or break down easily. It is very durable and not easily broken as it does not dent or crack well. Stainless steel also hasn't been proven to leech any chemicals into water supply like plastic and som other metals.
