Put your soup in a glass, china, or plastic container (not metal); cover it; and put in the refrigerator. If you plan to freeze the soup, put it in a non-metal container that is airtight. You should not leave the soup in the can because the metal may add an unpleasant taste and even encourage bacterial growth.

The best thing to use would be one of thoes plastic tupperware containers with the lid. You can take it and toss it if you don't need it later.

If you plan to eat it again soon, then a tupperware container kept in the fridge will work for a week maximum. Otherwise, you want to get a freezer-safe container (tupperware container with an airlock) and freeze the leftovers. If the soup is uncooked you could also have it recanned and stored as it was prior to its opening.

Many companies now make plastic containers that have lids that lock. These lids will keep out air and excess moisture. They are also leak proof in case your container tips over. The containers come in all shapes and sizes. Depending on the size of the leftover soup, you can choose a container that will not take up too much space.
