If you can't afford a beautician, the best product to use for a permanent color would be Clairol Texture N' Tones, Cream of Nature Hair, or Dark N' Lovely Hair.

You might want to consider bleaching your hair first as darker hair does not usually take color well. African American hair is also much stronger and more resistant to hair dyes. When you bleach your hair, it will be lighter and will take the color better. You can choose a Soft Sheen Carson brand such as Dark and Lovely.

Something with low developer that doesn't process the hair too much because it is brittle and fragile. Make sure to use conditioner afterwards to soften hair.

I highly recommend Clairol Texture N' Tones Permanent Hair coloring, Cream of Nature Hair Coloring, and/or Dark N' Lovely Hair Coloring.

A hair dye with low ammonia is best, since textured hair tends to be drier than straight hair. If you have a perm or relaxer in your hair, it is best to leave coloring to a professional, as mixing the wrong chemicals can cause hair breakage.

I think African American hair is a good color all on its own. Blonde looks really bad so stay away from that. The only color that may look good is a light brown or a dark red.
