If you're looking for a more formal slack for professional use you should try a lighter weight wool pant. You should get the highest quality fabric you can afford. Polyester pants are a lower quality and cotton will wrinkle and wear more easily. You should get a classic cut as well.

Linen would be the fabric of choice for summer trousers and wool would be the fabric of choice for trousers to be worn in the winter.

The best fabric for a foundation pair of trousers is garbadine. It is light weight enough that it can be worn for ten months ot the year and doesn't wrinkle.

I always stick with cotton as it's durable and easy to wash and take care of though they usually require ironing. If you're looking for something a little more low-maintanence, poly-cotton blends lay very nicely and resist wrinkles.

For casual trousers, I would recommend a blend of cotton and 5% spandex. A dressier alternative would be classic wool, with a silk lining.
