There are plenty of good point and shoot cameras in that range. If you are serious about photography, a used slr will surpass the flexibility of a new point and shoot.
Buy Canon or Nikon. Look for the offers online or in stores. You can find a model on sale. Image stabilization (in Canon) or Vibration reduction (in Nikon) are great features. A model with IS or VR will be the best choice.
