Shabby chic, which can be applied to furniture or clothing, is when clothes are specifically picked out for their age, wear and tear, wrinkly and old look as a particular style. Some people find that as an item is aged, it appears to be more valuable, which is the whole point when one desires to achieve this look.

Shabby Chic style creates elegance out of seemingly mundane items. Rachel Ashwell coined the term to describe the rooms she designed using cast off and found items. Painting mismatched funiture pieces all white and repurposing vintage textiles as slipcovers for old upholstered pieces gives new life to once forgotten items.

Shabby chic can either be an item that is older and has wear and tear or an item that has been aged or altered to appear older and worn. The trend grew in popularity and thus was considered chic and fashionable. Major retailers like Anthropologie also followed suit with this and used the inspiration in store designs and displays.
