Prior Service is any previous enlisted or commissioned service in the active duty, Guard, reserve, or Coast Guard. Prior service time effects your pay, time-in-service calculations and may entitle you to your previous grade. It DOES NOT count Jr ROTC, ROTC or time in a private military school or public service jobs like police or fire or paramedic.

The USAF Prior Service program is a direct duty assignment program that allows select individuals to return to active duty. Candidates must hold an AFSC, MOS, or NEC, which will qualify or convert to an Air Force Specialty. Contact an Air Force Recruiter, who is the best source of information regarding the program.

The term "prior service" when refering to the military mainly refers to having been in the military at an earlier time in your life. An example would be having done 4 year in the Marine Corps and then attempting to join the Navy, you would be considered prior service.
