Individuals who testify in court, regardless of the type of case, are "sworn in," which is taking an oath/promise to tell the truth. Perjury is lying to the court under that oath. Depending on the nature of the case, the perjury and its effect on the case, the judge can fine and/or imprison a witness found guilty of perjury.

Perjury is when an individual knowingly lies in court. For example, stating that you saw someone steal something when you were not actually there to witness it is perjury. Perjury is a criminal offense and can result in fines and jail time. Lying on government forms is also perjury.
