South American literature, Mexican literature especially, often relies on magical realism. The story is about Pedro and his family that is, like most family, incredibly ordinary while experiencing some extraordinary circumstances. Pedro's imagination frequently takes flight, so there are illusions and dreams, and sometimes it's difficult to keep those things sorted from reality.

It's a short novel written in 1955. It's about a guy named Juan Preciado who promises his mother, who is dying, that he will return one day to reclaim her land, which is in Comala. It is considered to be a work of "magical realism". Much of it takes place inside the head of the main character.
