A period is when a woman is menstruating. During this time, her body sheds an unfertilized egg and uterine wall. I happens roughly every month for healthy adult women.

Your period is a natural process in which the lining of the uterus, which built up after ovulation (about 2 weeks prior to your period) is shed. It is triggered by the deterioration of the corpus luteum, the "yellow body" from where your egg popped out of your ovary, signaling that no pregnancy occurred.
