That depends on what kind of case it is. Usually, you need to sign the summons and complaint, and return your answer or plea to the court. This may differ depending on the area of the proceedings. Bankruptcy, divorce, civil court, etc. all have different laws. You can call the local court to find out the next step to take.

A summons is an order to appear. The normal procedure is to go to court and answer whatever it is the court is asking, whether it be as a plaintiff or witness.

When you receive a summons to appear, go to court on the date indicated. There's really no "normal procedure" or other things that need to be done. The court summons people with good reason, so it is best not to question that.

If a Traffic Examiner from the Operator Services Agency reports you for an offence which leads to prosecution, you need to consider legal advice from a specialist road transport solicitor.

Most of the time the police come out to your house and serve you papers. Or it is mailed to you. Or it is tacked to your front door to make sure that you get the court date.

Formal documents served by sheriff or other showing you that a lawsuit has been filed against you. You may contact an attorney to file an answer. It will show the date, time and place to respond to the lawsuit. If you do not respond, a default will be taken against you for relief as demanded in the complaint.
