Passing is about two childhood friends that take different paths in life. One, Claire, is passed off as being white and married a white racist. The other, Irene, continues living as a black woman. Irene ends up living in Harlem and marries a black doctor. They two meet up in adulthood and Clair dies.

It is about a Black female who passes for White after she moves in with White relatives. It is an example of the plot of the tragic mulatto and the complexities of racial identity in the United States.
