The book is a fictional tale based on history. It chronicles the story of a Native American who goes from a reservation to living in a city and being forced to acclimate into life outside a reservation. Scott Momaday is a Native American and this book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1969.

It is the story of a clash of cultures. A Native American young man returns from war. He is conflicted about the rituals, right and traditions of his culture and the modern world of industrial America. His confusion leads him into a cycle of self-destruction, which sadly is all too common among Native American populations.
