What your doctor meant is that your child cannot process information. For example your child might not respond to cut because he lacks the ability to feel the pain.

Sensory processing disorder is a neurological condition. People who have this disorder are able to sense information, but they perceive it abnormally. There are multiple types of this disorder, but they all involve varying degrees of difficulty with handling information that comes in through the senses: hearing, sight, smell, taste, touch, and also the proprioceptive and vestibular senses.

The child has a hard time figuring out what to do with the information their senses bring in. Sometimes the child is very sensitive to clothing and a tag is very bothersome or to textures in food and can't stand to have some sorts of foods in their mouth.
