A 501(c)(3) designation is given to a nonprofit organization that is recognized by the IRS. Donations made to these organizations are tax deductible. PTA means the organization (Parent-Teacher Association) is tax-exempt and any fundraisers must me related to education.

501(c)(3) determination letters designate organizations as "public charities" and makes them eligible to receive tax deductible contributions. The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a 501©(3)charity and all local PTA's that affiliate with the national organization qualify as 501(c)(3)charities as well.

The PTA organization must apply to the IRS for status as a charity, in order for donations to the charity to be tax-deductible to the donor. After successful application, the IRS will issue a determination letter affirming the charitable status of the PTA as a 501c(3) charity.

The IRS sends this after an organization has applied for tax-exempt status. It shows which section of IRS code the organization falls under. Keep this document in a safe place as it is the primary proof of your organization's tax-exempt status.
