In a nutshell, his theory is that we are a product of our environment. People go through various stages of their lives in which decisions are made, there are stable periods and there are transitional periods during which decisions are usually based upon people and situations around us.

Levinson was a psychologist, he thought that during their life people go through the same predefinite "seasonal cycles", such as pre-adulthood, early adulthood, adulthood and late adulthood. The transition between these periods is often difficult, and can lead to out of character behaviour, giving an explanation to the phenomenon of "midlife crisis".
