When hanging a punching bag, one must be careful about the placement. Assuming it will be hung from the ceiling, the ceiling where it is being placed must be strong enough to hold the weight of the bag. The bracket that will hold the bag and it's chain must be drilled into the ceiling securely.
This typically involves choosing mounting hardware, typically a screw-hook, to hang it, and a good location. Homes with unfinished ceilings in the basement make this task very easy, as it merely involves mounting the hook, and then hanging the bag on it.
You want to make sure that when you're hanging anything you'll be beating around, it's securely anchored into an overhead joist. Usually, punching bags come with their own mounting equipment, and you just have to screw it in with screws that are meant for wood--if you're not sure which ones, ask someone at the hardware store.
