There is no good reason to cut a parakeet's tail feathers. If you want to prevent the bird from being able to fly, take it to an avian vet or other expert to have the wing feathers trimmed.

Cutting a parakeet's tail feathers is not recommended for any reason. Parakeets use their tail feathers for balance. If they are trimmed or cut, the bird may lose its balance and sustain a fall from the perch which may cause a severe injury.

the tail feathers off of a parakeet being careful to cut. Every time when I let them out so i can clean their cage 3 of them would stay together and 1 of them would start flying all over the place and its REALLY hard for us to catch it.

Maybe the one who is giving you trouble isn't let out enough to exercise, so she tries to get as much as she can whenever she gets the chancet. Cutting her tail feathers won't rid her of the ability to fly, anyway.  add a comment

All you need to do is hold your bird still and clip the tail feathers off. Try to do it at an angle so it doesn't look odd and don't cut too far up or you will cut the bird and he will bleed.
