It is a medical condition referring to a temporary or permanent loss of one's sense of smell. It is also possible to have specific anosmia, which means one cannot smell a certain substance or certain class of substances. Causes for anosmia vary widely, ranging from temporary infections to brain damage.

Anosmia is an olfactory disorder. The sufferer is unable to perceive odors. It may be a total loss of the sense of smell or could be the inability to smell a specific odor. In some cases it is temporary, in others, permanent.
