Empire furniture has bold carvings in high relief, with emphasis on the outline rather than the detail. The feet are usually large scroll, ball or carved animal (dolphins or lions being the most popular). Oversized motifs, large scrolls, veneer finishes (mostly rosewood or mahogany), gilding and stenciling were also popular.
The empire couch was generally made between the 1800's to the 1900's but now has reproductions made by today's furniture companies. Empire couches are very ornate and tend to have wooden legs that raise the couch off the ground. They almost always have ornate arms that are either wooden or a mix of wood and cloth.
