Empire furniture has bold carvings in high relief, with emphasis on the outline rather than the detail. The feet are usually large scroll, ball or carved animal (dolphins or lions being the most popular). Oversized motifs, large scrolls, veneer finishes (mostly rosewood or mahogany), gilding and stenciling were also popular.

An empire couch has slender low arm rests, and on the back of the couch the sides gradually come to a high point in the center of the couch.

The empire couch was generally made between the 1800's to the 1900's but now has reproductions made by today's furniture companies. Empire couches are very ornate and tend to have wooden legs that raise the couch off the ground. They almost always have ornate arms that are either wooden or a mix of wood and cloth.

An empire couch can be from different periods, or in different styles. The common factor is the use of exposed wood in a decorative fashion.
