Question by  LexiLynn (28)

What is a tire rod?

I am learning as much as I can about cars, but I don't know what people are talking about when they refer to tire rods.

Tie rods are metal rods that direct force from the steering rack to the wheel spindles. There are two pieces that thread into each other to allow for alignment adjustment.

Well first off the part you are referring too is called a tie rod not tire rod. Basically it is a join connected to the power steering rack and pinion.

I think you are talking about "tie" rods. These are metal rods with adjustable threaded ends used to attach the steering box to the wheels. They actually serve two purposes. The allow for steering of the wheels but can also be adjusted to set toe alignment of the front wheels.

You may be confusing tie rods with tire rods. Tie rod -part of the steering mechanism in a vehicle. Or it is another name for the spokes on a wheel.
