Stock or interest in a company is sold to raise capital. Purchasing a share of stock gives the buyer an interest an an owner in the company. The individual/group that holds the majority of stock controls the company.

Stock is shares in a given company. One share of stock is one ownership piece of the corporation. How valuable or how much one share costs depends on the valuation of the company. Each share gets to "vote" so if you own ten shares you have ten company votes.

A stock is like a share of a company. Let's say that a company had 100 shares selling at $5 each share. If you want to invest in this company, you purchase the stock at $5 per share.
