A receptacle in which there are two or more circuits within a single receptacle. The top half of the receptacle would be on a seperate breaker from the bottom half.

I would have to say this is a receptacle that is a duplex style plug but each plug in is on a seperate circuit. So basically there are two different breakers being used. Potentially, you could have the top or vise versa on or off while the other half of the plug is still hot.

A spilt circuit receptacle has the top and bottom outlets of a duplex receptacle wired seperately to two different circuits in the service panel. Each outlet has its own wiring coming from the breaker box.
