it's a special guy having deep knowledge in wines, and other related things. He should immediately distinguish wine sorts and makes, better - even production years. Deeper knowledge of wine manufacturing and history is also appreciated quite much for this profession.

i always thought sommeliers were unnecessary, but i once went to a very fancy restaurant and the sommelier helped us pick good wine based on what we were eating. everything was paired together so exquisitely.

I believe a sommelier is someone who does all of their arithmetic in French. This is an especially sought after position in parts of Africa where former French colonies have decided that basic mathematical figuring should retains some of their colonialist roots.
