Technically, plants are members of the plant kingdom, the characteristics of these organisms include the ability to produce their own food from nutrients in soil or water and sunlight. They generally use the process of photosynthesis, using the green pigment, chlorophyll. This process combines sunlight and carbon dioxide, producing sugars. Plants are generally stationary, having roots.
