Modeled after the apparatus used by Native Americans to carry their young on their backs, a papoose board is a medical contraption used to confine or restrain an infant or small child. When the child is placed on the backboard, straps are fastened around him, much like a straight jacket.

It is a large, flat board with restraining devices, or straps, to prevent a person from moving. These straps generally hold down the upper, mid and lower bodies. Some papoose boards also hold down legs and/or immobilize the head. They are used for medical and dental procedures, in emergencies to transport patients safely, and when caring for special needs patients.

A papoose board can mean a board in a baby carrying backpack. It can also mean a board used to shape a baby's head.
