The nuchal fold scan is a prenatal scan that can help assess the baby' risk of Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. Ultrasound measures the clear space in the tissue at the back of the developing fetus's neck between the 11th and 14th weeks of developemt.

A nuchal fold is a dark bar at the back of the neck of the baby that is seen under ultrasound imaging. It does not diagnose a chromosomal abnormality but suggests a greater risk of the baby having one.
