Penicillin is a natural antibiotic. It was isolated from the Penicillin fungi in 1928 by Alexander Fleming, though it is said that blue bread mold was packed into wounds throughout the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, over-prescription of antibiotics has led to bacterial resistance, requiring modern, synthetic antibiotics to be created.
