What is a good weight lifting bench to get for a 17 year old male?

My son is asking for a weight bench for Christmas and I have no idea where to start looking for them or how to determine which is best for his age group.

Any adjustable bench will do. It should have an incline to allow for inclined press exercises. Resistance training benches such as Soloflex are ideal for young guys just starting out.

The best place to look for a weight lifting bench is by going to department/exercise/wellness centers. Go to a store that will specialize in exercise equipment, and that sells a lot of it. The bench your son will need will be determined by his weight, height, how much muscle he already has, and his strength level.

Really for someone young who may be inexperienced in weight lifting an assisted bench is the best. This way if he is lifting on his own and he cant get the weight up the bench will catch the weight before it goes down far enough to hurt him or leave him in a painful position.

The biggest things to consider in a weight bench are ease of use and does it fit him. Go to local stores that sell fitness equipment and talk to someone that sells them. They can give you positives and negatives about any model. You need to also consider what your son wants to do, will he use it, etc..

Function is an important factor to consider. Weight benches are designed to accommodate different exercises and different is weight capacities - a better bench allows you to use more weight.

Pretty much all Weight lifting benches are made similar. Really it's just a padded table with a rack for holding the bar. Its worth the investment to get one that will last a long time though. Or you could go to a fitness equipment re-seller to purchase a pre-owned model. That will cut the cost down considerably.

It depends on how much he weighs, how strong and active he is, etc. Generally, good strength is measured on whether or not one can bench press their own weight, so if he is starting out, I would say that he should be able to bench approximately 70-80% of his weight.

Start shopping at your local sports stores. BIG 5 and Sports Chalet are both well known stores that carry weight lifting bench. If he is new to weight lifting, get him one that is designed for beginners, usually this type comes with lighter weights and bars with security locks.
