The cause of chronic hives is a mystery so removal of the stimulus is not an option. Most often hives of this type are controlled with antihistamines such as Claritin.

Since hives are a common result of an allergic reaction, treatment should include an oral antihistamine, as well as determining the cause of the allergic reaction. Hives are itchy and uncomfortable and may sometimes be soothed by a topical solution such as calamine lotion.

Simple treatments may not work for chronic hives, you have visit your doctor because you may need stronger treatment such as oral steroids like prednisone to relives the inflammation, but remember doctor prescription is needed because of associated side effects especially for prolonged use.

After you go to the emergency room, see an allergist. Hives are an allergic reaction to something in your environment. Subsequent reactions can be very severe, up to an including death by anaphylactic shock. You may need maintenance with antihistamines and in severe cases oral steroids may be necessary. You won't know until you see a specialist. Don't delay!

The first thing that needs to be done is find the source of the hives. It could be caused by skin reactions, food ingestion, or even breathing in something that you are allergic to. Benedryl and atarax are usually prescribed. Epi pens are also a good choice.

The best treatment for chronic hives would be to see your doctor so he/she can help you find out what is causing them and then they will help you find and treatment and hopefully a cure.
