'Son, either with this or on this. ' Mothers would say this to their sons meaning they should come home with the sheild or on it dead for deserters 'drop' it.

Ή τάν ή επί τάς. (i tan i epi tas). In modern Greek it means that someone should do his duty regardless the cost.
