Solids always work. A solid with a piping in a complimentary color is also a nice touch. Stripes can have a "decorator" look, but be careful they do not overpower the room.

The best pattern is a plaid or check pattern. This will accentuate the curve of the bay window and give it more depth. Even if you mix a plaid that has various colors and use one of those colors to have a stripe pattern that would be fine too. Also coordinate some pillows back to the curtains.

Make it a Solid color that will go good with your wall. If you choose a patterned fabric, use one that will go with the color of you wall. Do not use a small and crowded patteren. Use a pattern that is well spaced and well sized

It mainly depends on the size of the room and the amount of natural light in the room. If the room is small or doesn't get a lot of natural light, a simple pattern in muted tones usually works best. A larger room with a lot of natural light can normally handle a busier pattern in bolder colours.
