A good exercise to build up dexterity is to play one finger per fret per string starting at the low E string, and then move up one fret per string as you go up the neck. Start very slowly at first, and as you get better, increase your speed. It will keep your fingers warmed up and improve your dexterity.

A good way to get better quickly with any musical instrument is by listening. Go find cd's of your favorite guitar player and listen away. The more aural vocabulary you build up the easier it is to replicate. Go to your local guitar shop and buy a song book of popular music that you enjoy to listen to.
