A dipole moment refers to the electronegativity difference between two atoms in a compound. Molecules with a net dipole moment are polar molecules.

A dipole moment is basically the strength of a dipole. Dipoles are things that have two poles, usually found in magnets (north and south poles) and molecules (positive and negative poles). For example, the negative electrons in a water molecule are more attracted to the oxygen atom, creating an electric dipole moment which points toward the positive hydrogen nuclei.
