A car boot sale is a (generally) British term for what's called a yard, garage or rummage sale in the States. Usually done on weekends and in somewhat of a flea market fashion. As I understand it the term came about from people literally selling things from the trunk or boot of the car.

In Britain, the "car boot" is the trunk of the car. So this is what is also called a rummage, jumble, flea market, or white elephant sale. It is essentially an "anything and everything" brought to some location for purchase to any and all who stop by kind of sale.
